HSDC wanted to convert and change the use of a section of the ground floor of the Austen Building at Aton College to create a new independent living centre for students. Temple Ford Design was appointed to prepare the Technical Design Stage drawings and information for the Contractor to work from and Building Control to approve.

An existing TV Filming Studio was removed and replaced with a new mock home teaching space that helps educate students on how to live independently. There was also the creation of smaller rooms accommodating Therapy, Sensory and Quiet rooms as well as a new Accessible Sanitary space incorporating WC's, Hygiene and Inspection Room.

Wall, floor and ceiling finishes were changed throughout to refresh to whole space. As part of choosing the finishes Light Reflectance Values had to be taken into account as well as colours that were also considered to be Autism friendly.

In addition, part of the Foulkes building was refurbished to create a mock hospital ward to be used as a practical learning facility.
